![]() ![]() I knew nothing of the story going in and as a college graduate myself with a blurry direction in life, it hit home. Still, I’m glad it took me this long to read it. Frankly, it’s a crime that it’s taken me this long to get a copy and read it, but looking back I was still very much into Naruto and other shonen in 2008 so I guess I can’t blame my younger self for not looking into critical material. It was originally published in a weekly format in 20 and eventually came to the States as a single volume in 2008. Written and illustrated by Inio Asano, Solanin is a solemn tale about a couple who tries to make sense of their lives after college. Sure, it’s not older adults, but at least it’s something. ![]() Some of the greatest fiction of our time has been led by youthful heroes, but it’s getting very tired.įortunately, there is a short alternative in manga that deals with the complexities of life after college. ![]() There’s nothing wrong with young characters. Another huge block is that many of these stories star children and teenagers. There are some series that are so good but they’re simply too long, reaching dozens of volumes in length. It’s a difficult question, because most of the time I find myself wanting to recommend manga like Fullmetal Alchemist and One Piece, but I know I can’t. I’m often asked by friends what manga is worth looking into. ![]()
